Our Commitment to Sustainability

At Glengowla Mines, we are proud to preserve and share Ireland’s rich mining heritage—but we are just as committed to protecting its future. As caretakers of this historic site and its surrounding landscape, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do.

To remain a place of beauty for generations to come.

We strive to minimise our environmental impact through responsible tourism practices and ongoing conservation efforts. Our mine tours and activities are designed not only to educate but also to inspire a deeper respect for our natural world. From maintaining the integrity of the land and waterways around the mines to reducing waste and energy use, we take thoughtful steps to ensure Glengowla Mines remains a place of beauty for generations to come.

We also work closely with local artisans, farmers, and suppliers to support the regional economy and promote sustainable, community driven development. Our gift shop features locally sourced products, many handcrafted from natural or recycled materials, offering visitors a way to shop consciously and support local talent.

Our inclusion in the SAC.

Glengowla Mines is proud to be located within a designated Special Area of Conservation (SAC), recognising the outstanding ecological and geological importance of our surrounding landscape in the heart of Connemara. This status highlights the rich biodiversity, unique habitats, and protected species that make this region so special at both a national and European level. Our inclusion in the SAC reflects our ongoing commitment to responsible heritage tourism, environmental stewardship, and the careful preservation of the natural beauty that has shaped the history of our silver and lead mines. We work closely with conservation guidelines to ensure that visitors can experience the site’s remarkable mining heritage while safeguarding the fragile ecosystems that make this landscape truly exceptional.
