Discover Our Working Seismograph
Glengowla Mines is part of the Irish National Seismic Network, an island-wide system of seismographs that monitor geological activity in real time. During your visit, you can see our fully functioning seismograph in action.
On request, our staff will explain how the system works and show you a live computer readout of seismic activity. And if your group is feeling brave… you can even try to create your very own “earthquake” and watch the machine respond!
What Is Seismology?
Seismology is the scientific study of earthquakes and the movement of elastic waves through the Earth and other planet-like bodies. This field explores not only earthquakes themselves, but also the effects they cause, such as tsunamis, and the many different sources of seismic activity. These sources can include volcanic and tectonic movements, oceanic and atmospheric disturbances, and even artificial events like controlled explosions.
At Glengowla Mines, our working seismograph contributes real-time data to the Irish National Seismic Network. The station’s live readout is recorded under the code EI.IGLA..HHZ, allowing scientists to monitor seismic activity as it happens.

Would definitely recommend stopping by. Morgan AllenTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We visited today while with our tour group, and the sheep-herding demonstration was my favorite thing to see and do so far. Such a sweet family who own and run this working farm and mine. We learned so much about the sheep we’ve been seeing all over the Irish countryside, and were absolutely amazed with the skills of the dogs. If I could move into their precious cottage today, I would have. Such a peaceful and beautiful environment here. And you can find many Irish souvenirs from their gift shop to take home with you. It was nice to be able to purchase many of the items I have been looking to purchase before finishing vacation, and I’m so happy my purchases went to support their family-run business. If you’re in the area or planning a trip to Ireland, definitely add this stop to your itinerary! You won’t regret the visit.
