Seismology at Glengowla Mines
Connemara, Galway
Glengowla Mines, Glengowla Oughterard, Co Galway H91 PX22
The map below links to Information about real-time earthquakes, online catalog search of archives, seismicity maps and statistics.
Glengowla mines are part of a network of seismographs in Ireland called the Irish National Seismic Network. A working seismograph can be seen at the mine. On request, our staff
can provide an explanation on how it works, producing a computer readout and if the group think they are able.....they can attempt to create their own earthquake!
Prior booking is essential for a full seismograph demonstration. Please contact us to book
What is Seismology?
Seismology is the scientific study of earthquakes and the propagation of elastic waves through the Earth or through other planet-like bodies. The field also includes studies of
earthquake effects, such as tsunamis as well as diverse seismic sources such as volcanic, tectonic, oceanic, atmospheric, and artificial processes (such as explosions).
The seismograph at Glengowla contributes real time data to the Irish Seismic Network, you can see our readout EI.IGLA..HHZ by clicking on the graphic
